It happened in 1992, at our national professional association annual convention. A gay colleague, who is also a lawyer, came rushing at me and screamed, "Margo, you can't legislate morality." What happened next was one of the most shocking things I have ever experienced. God used me just like Balaam's donkey, and came to my defense in a mighty way. Out of my mouth came the words; "Oh, Jamie, grow up, you of all people should know; ALL LAW IS LEGISLATED MORALITY." I must admit, I was as shocked as the shock that was registered on the face of my colleague. But, the more I thought about it, the truer I realized that statement is. Every representative democracy in the world functions on that basic principle. The people of the nation choose their standard of morality and entrust their elected representatives to legislate with that "moral code" in mind. Somebody's moral code is going to have precedence over our country. It is just a matter of whose code will prevail. And, that decision will ultimately determine the future of our nation and every nation. Clearly, our Founders designed our form of government with the understanding that the generalized principles of the Christian moral code would serve as the basis of the American experiment in government. (See the quotes from the Founders on this website.) The individual whom our founding fathers quoted the most was Baron Charles Louis Joseph Montesquieu. Montesquieu wrote: "Society, notwithstanding all its revolutions, must repose on principles that do not change. The Christian religion, which ordains that men should love each other, would without doubt have every nation blest with the best civil, the best political laws; because these, next to this religion, are the greatest good that men can give and receive." The wisdom of our system of government is seen in its longevity, having lasted far longer than any other Constitution and purely Democratic Republican form of government in the history of the world. Our Constitution and our system of government have been
severely abused by activist liberal judges on the federal bench beginning
around 1947. In 1820, Thomas
Jefferson made the statement, "To consider the judges as the ultimate
arbiters of all constitutional questions [is] a very dangerous doctrine
indeed, and one that would place us under the despotism of an
oligarchy." On his website,
Dr. James Dobson, Founder and Chairman of Focus on the Family states: "The
liberal elite and the judges at the highest level and some members of the
media are determined to remove every evidence of faith in God from this
entire culture. They are determined to control more and more of our
private lives, and it is time that we said, 'Enough is enough'" (for more
information see: www.family.org/cforum/judicial_tyranny/) Our very form of government and our way of life are at stake, if Christians in America fail to see what is happening and don't take a stand to restore our nation to its Christian heritage. The First Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, John Jay, on October 12, 1816, admonished: "Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers." The devout Christians of this nation need to always carefully consider the candidates and vote for only those candidates that most fully embrace Christian principles. And, since Jesus told us that "by their fruits you shall know them," we also need to carefully examine which candidates most fully bear the fruits of the spirit, and whose lives bear evidence of adherence to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Since Jesus warned us that every idle word we speak will be judged some day, I believe that God will likewise call us to account some day regarding our choices in governmental leaders.
